If you're looking to get a web site created for your organization and don't know where to start, here are some points to consider.

Determining business requirements:
  • Do you have a logo and a corporate identity and colour theme? If not you may want to discuss creating one. After all your web site should compliment your organization's identity.

  • What is the purpose of the web site? Is it mainly for providing information? Is it mainly for advertising the organization's existence/business, it's address, contact information, etc? or both? Do I need to conduct transactions on the web site?

  • What information do I want people to know that I am unable to effectively deliver via other methods? Mark it down if any.

  • What is the scope of my target audience? Am I going to reach out to people with disability such as blind and deaf? Am I going to offer information in different languages?

  • Creating and maintaining web site costs. Is adequate budget allocated? Some of the costs are:

    • Creating web site design (normally one time expense)

    • Having someone write content

    • Engaging developer for advanced functionality such as ecommerce (normally one time expense)

    • Renting domain name (yearly expense)

    • Web site hosting (monthly expense)

    • Maintaining web site (need based expense)

    • Art-work/photographs/images acquisition cost (need based expense)

  • Make a list of pieces of information you want to display on the web site. Now break them down into groups of similar things. Now trim the content to make it short and concise. Note that on the web people don't spend time reading long text. Example of the pieces of information you may want to display are:

    • About the organization
    • Contact info
    • Upcoming events
    • Announcements

Now name each grouping of grouped information. This grouped element will become your menu item. You may want to explore other similar web sites to see how they've done things.

Determining technical requirements:
  • What level of functionality is required in the web site. Are there areas of the site that will require simple text updates frequently? Do I need the ability to update information on the site myself rather than paying webmaster to do it for me?

  • Note that dynamic functionality that will allow you to update parts of the site yourself require more work to setup in the beginning but once setup, it does not require webmaster/developer’s involvement on a day-to-day function.

  • What features do I need on the web hosting plan? Do I need email accounts, do I need to post large multimedia files, do I require money transactions on my site?

  • The web developer can assist in determining the technical requirements when you have the business requirements clearly defined.
